Providence, RI - On Saturday, November 1, 2003 the Brown field hockey team (11-5, 4-2) knocked off the University of Pennsylvania (10-6, 3-3) in a heated Ivy League contest. The Quakers took an early 1-0 lead but Brown's seniors refused to quit in their last home game of their careers, and tied it 1-1 in the first half, before scoring the game-winner with 13 minutes left in the second.
Penn scored on a breakaway with 27:21 remaining in the first half. The Bears played with the Quakers eventually coming up with the tying goal with 11:47 on the clock. Senior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) picked up a rebound in front of the Penn goal and tipped it in to knot the score to 1-1.
Both teams played an intense and physical match. Bruno, however, came out on top with 13:43 left in the second. After a great rush by Pierpont to work the ball up field, senior Molly Carleton (Shaker Heights, OH) picked up a rebound on the left and zinged the ball into the goal for the final 2-1 score. Today's contest marked the final career home game for the class of 2004, including Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX), Meaghan Harwood (Hoosick Falls, NY), Nora Pickens (Wyndmoor, PA) and Margaret Pulvermann (Bethesda, MD), Carleton and Pierpont.
The Bears' win against Penn moved them into a tie with Yale for third place in the Ivy League. The Bears and the Yale Bulldogs will face-off in New Haven next Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 12:00 noon. The outcome of this match will determine the Bears' final Ivy League standing.
