Townsend's Three Goals Propel Bears Past Cornell, 4-2
Oct. 23, 2005
ITHACA, NY - Senior Brooke Townsend (Stamford, CT) scored three goals to lead the Brown field hockey team (6-7, 3-2) to a 4-2 victory over Cornell (9-5, 4-2) on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Cornell's Schoellkopf Field.
Brown wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead when Townsend scored her first of three goals just 3:16 into the contest. That 1-0 lead would hold until early in the second half when senior Kristen Vincent (Glens Falls, NY) converted on a penalty corner just 2:02 into the second half to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Freshman Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA) and junior Samantha Lloyd (Shavertown, PA) each assisted on the goal.
Just 7:45 later, at 44:47, Townsend added her second goal of the game to increase the Bears' lead to 3-0. She scored her final goal of the game at the 62:18 mark as Brown took a 4-0 lead with just 7:42 left to play.
The Big Red attempted a come-back, scoring two goals in the final three minutes of play, but it wasn't enough as Brown held on for the 4-2 victory.
In net for the Bears, sophomore Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) recorded four saves. Brown continues action this week with its final two home contests of the 2005 season. The Bears host Holy Cross in their final non-league game of the year on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., and Penn on Saturday at 12:00 noon.
