PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University Field Hockey Team (4-8) dropped a 5-1 decision to cross-town rival Providence College (9-9) on Wednesday afternoon on Warner Roof.
The Friars took control from the opening whistle, scoring two goals in the opening 10 minutes. However, Brown slowed things down and had momentum heading towards the end of the first half, until Providence scored its third goal of the game just 17 seconds before halftime.
The Bears had an opportunity to get on the board less then five minutes into the second half when junior Kristen Vincent (Glens Falls, NY) was awarded a penalty stroke. However, Providence's Meredith Jones dove in the correct direction to save the shot and keep Brown off the board.
The Friars then scored two more goals just 7:21 apart, both off penalty corners, to take a 5-0 lead with 17:07 left to play.
Brown continued to fight though, and the Bears were awarded three penalty corners towards the end of the game. After the initial attempt on the second corner failed, junior Brooke Townsend (Stamford, CT) sent the ball back in to Vincent, who one-timed the ball to senior Evan O'Connell (Greenwich, CT). O'Connell slipped the ball past Jones for Brown's lone goal of the game with 3:03 on the clock.
Freshman goalie Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) played another strong game for Brown, turning aside 12 Providence shots. The Bears continue action this weekend when they host Ivy-foe Cornell at 12:00 noon on Warner Roof.
