PRINCETON, NJ - Paige Schmidt had a hand in four goals, scoring twice and adding two assists, to lead the Princeton field hockey team (7-5, 5-0) to a 6-1 win over Brown (7-3, 3-1) on Saturday afternoon in a battle of Ivy League unbeatens at Class of '52 Stadium.
Both teams had chances early but neither team was able to score until the Tigers took advantage of two penalty corners in the final five minutes of the half. At 31:39 Princeton opened the scoring Holly McGarvie redirected Schmidt's blast from the top of the circle. Less than two minutes later the lead was 2-0 when Schmidt's blast from the circle hit the wood at the back of the net.
Down by two goals entering the second half, Brown pressured Princeton for the first 10 minutes of the second half, firing seven shots and having three corners in the span. Brown finally broke through at 44:38 when senior Stacy Gugliotta (East Falmouth, MA) scored on a rebound. Despite the goal, Princeton goalkeeper Allison Nemeth kept the Tigers in the game during the Brown rally, making six of her eight saves in the game in that 10-minute span.
Moving within a goal was as close as Brown would get as Princeton scored four unanswered goals for the 6-1 final.
Nemeth and junior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) each made eight saves in the game. Brown returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Providence in a cross-town rival at 4:00 p.m.
