Bears Come From Behind to Hand Columbia 2-1 Loss
Oct. 9, 2004
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University Field Hockey Team (3-6, 1-2) picked up its first Ivy win of the season with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Columbia (4-7, 1-2).
After nearly an entire half of scoreless action, the Lions took a 1-0 lead with just 3:14 left in the first half. Ramie Merrill crossed the ball in front of the cage to teammate Elizabeth Reeve, who shot the ball through the legs of Brown freshman goalie Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA). The Bears were outshot 8-7 in the first half, as Hodavance recorded six saves in the first 35:00.
However, the second half was a different story, as Brown controlled the play, outshooting Columbia 9-1. Junior leading scorer Tess Belmont (Poughkeepsie, NY) started the Bears' comeback with 19:27 remaining in the game. Sophomore Tracy Dungo (North Caldwell, NJ) took a shot from the top of the circle that Belmont deflected up and over Columbia's goalie to tie the game at 1-1.
With the game apparently headed into overtime late in the second half, Columbia committed a foul inside their circle, awarding Brown a penalty corner. Junior Kristen Vincent (Glens Falls, NY) capitalized on the direct hit with just 55 seconds remaining in the game, to lift the Bears to their first Ivy win of the season. Belmont, who had the push in and senior Julia Kelderman (Chevy Chase, MD), who had the stick stop, were awarded assists on the goal. It was Vincent's team-leading fifth goal of the year, and Belmont's and Kelderman's team-leading sixth assist of the year.
In net for the Bears, Hodavance made seven saves, while junior Lindsay Boris (Shavertown, PA) added one defensive save. Brown continues action on Wednesday, October 13, when it hosts Fairfield at 4:00 p.m.
