PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior leading scorer Samantha Lloyd (Shavertown, PA) scored two goals and added an assist as the Brown field hockey team (4-4) cruised past Colgate (5-6) in a very physical non-league game on Sunday afternoon at Warner Roof.
Brown wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead when Lloyd connected with her first goal at the 16:09 mark of the first half. Senior Brooke Townsend (Stamford, CT) sent the ball in from just outside the circle and Lloyd one-timed it into the opposite corner for her seventh goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, at 20:06, freshman Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA) gave Brown a 2-0 lead with her second goal of the year. Senior Kristen Vincent (Glens Falls, NY) dribbled up field and passed to Eaton out wide and to the left of the cage. Eaton pulled the Colgate goalie out and slid the ball underneath the keeper as she dove to save the shot.
Just 1:16 later, at 21:22, Lloyd added her second of the game on a Brown penalty corner. Townsend settled the ball and quickly passed to Vincent, who fired a shot on net. Just before the Colgate goalie was able to stop the ball, Lloyd tipped it in as Brown took a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
Townsend scored on another Brown penalty corner at 51:12, off assists from Lloyd and senior Laura Kavazanjian (Setauket, NY) for the final, 4-0.
The Bears played solid defense during the entire game as sophomore Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA), who made three saves in the first half, wasn't forced to make another save until the very end of the game. She finished with five saves in net to earn her first shutout of the season. Freshman Ann LeClerc (Acton, MA) also made a key defensive save late in the game to preserve the shutout, Brown's second of the season.
The Bears return to Ivy action on Saturday, October 8, when they travel to Quinnipiac to face Columbia in a 1:00 p.m. neutral site game.
