BOSTON, MA - The Brown field hockey team (5-2) saw its three-game winning streak get snapped on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bears dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Northeastern in Boston, MA. This marks the second straight year that Brown has lost by just one goal to the Huskies, who defeated the Bears, 3-2, last season in Providence.
After a scoreless first half, Brown got on the board 12:45 into the second frame when senior Stacy Gugliotta (East Falmouth, MA) scored an unassisted goal, her third of the season. This was one of just two second-half shots that the Bears could get past the Northeastern defense, which also did not allow a Brown corner in the second half.
However, the Huskies, who outshot Brown 10-2 in the second half, and 17-5 for the game, responded just over 13 minutes later with the game-tying goal off the stick of Stephanie Casper.
With the game tied, the teams went seven-on-seven for overtime. The two teams traded chances early on, but Northeastern began to exert some pressure as time wore on. The Huskies' pressure paid off in the form of Whitney Shean's game-winner just 3:40 into the first overtime, as she scored on the very first shot of the period by either team.
Junior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) recorded six saves in net with three saves in each half. The Bears will look to rebound this weekend when they host Boston University in another non-league contest, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
