Lloyd's Three Goals Lead Bears Past Rhode Island, 6-2
Sept. 21, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior Samantha Lloyd (Shavertown, PA) scored three goals as the Brown field hockey team (2-3) snapped a three-game skid with a 6-2 victory over the University of Rhode Island (4-4) on Wednesday afternoon.
The two teams played each other to a scoreless tie during the first 35 minutes of action, with Brown holding a narrow, 2-1, advantage in shots.
However after being shutout in each of their past three games, the Bears came out of the break looking for their first goal in over 245 minutes of action. Just over five minutes into the half, at 40:14, Brown was awarded a penalty stroke after Lloyd was tripped by the URI goalie on a one-on-one. Senior Kristen Vincent's (Glens Falls, NY) shot was saved by M.J. Britt, who finished the afternoon with 18 stops, but momentum swung in favor of Brown, which scored two straight goals over the next 4:55.
After sophomore Ani Kazarian (Providence, RI) sent the ball into the circle to Lloyd, Lloyd's first shot was saved by Britt. However, she collected the rebound and knocked the ball into the opposite corner for a 1-0 lead at 41:29. Less than five minutes later, at 45:09, Lloyd gave Brown a 2-0 lead, knocking in the rebound of her own shot again.
The Rams slowed Brown down when Caitlin Rooney scored her first of two goals at 50:28. However, less than two minutes later, at 52:06, Lloyd connected for the third time, this time off a pass up the middle from junior Rebecca Mondics (Bethesda, MD), to regain Brown's two-goal cushion.
Again, URI came to within one goal, just 1:19 later, but that was as close as the Rams would get, as Brown added three more goals in the final 12:40 for the 6-2 win.
Kazarian knocked a loose ball into the back of the net at 57:20 after senior Brooke Townsend's (Stamford, CT) shot was blocked on a Brown penalty corner. Then, at 60:38, Mondics back-handed the ball into the right corner of the net after pulling Britt out of the cage.
Freshman Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA), who had several scoring chances in the second half, netted her first career goal with 27 seconds remaining, for the 6-2 final. Eaton dribbled more than half the length of the field, before scoring on a reverse stick-flick that sailed over Britt's head and into the back of the net.
Junior Evelyn Brosi (Baltimore, MD) made her first career start in the cage for the Bears and picked up the victory with seven saves. After opening the year with five straight home games, Brown travels to Harvard this Saturday to face the Crimson at 12:00 noon in its first away game of the season.
