PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team (1-4, 0-1) dropped a 1-0 decision to unbeaten Columbia (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday afternoon in the Ivy opener for both teams. The Lions dominated the Bears from start to finish, recording a 17-2 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 margin in shots on goal.
Despite getting outshot 10-2 in the opening 35 minutes, Brown's defense did a nice job of forcing several of those shots wide or blocking them, as sophomore Lauren Kessler (Burtonsville, MD) needed only three saves to keep Columbia out of the net.
The Lions also held a 5-1 margin in penalty corners during the first half, but they were unable to score, as the two teams headed into the break tied at 0-0.
Columbia finally broke through 12:29 into the second half when Catherine Campbell's shot from the left side beat Kessler to the far post. Campbell's goal would be all the Lions would need for the win, as they held possession for nearly the entire half, earning a 7-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Kessler finished with four saves for the Bears, who continue action on Tuesday, September 23rd, when they host UMass at 4:00 p.m.
