Corners proved to be the key to the game with URI taking the lead with a minute left in the first half on a corner. Brown remained scoreless for much of the second half until Buza scored off the initial shot on a corner sending the game into overtime. As the clock was winding down on the first overtime period, Buza scored again, bringing sudden death to the Rams and a 2-1 victory to the Bears.
The first half was played primarily in the midfield with both goalies seeing action. The Rams scored on a penalty corner with 1:02 left in the first half. The Bears trailed going into halftime. In the second half, Bruno had difficulty getting on the board and ended up scrambling for a goal in the last five minutes. They found one on a penalty corner. Senior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) passed it in to junior Julia Kelderman (Chevy Chase, MD) who made the stick stop. Then Buza connected with a hard drive--the ball hit the top of the wood over the supine goalie. With a mere 2:25 left in regulation, neither team was able to score and the game went to seven aside overtime.
Several minutes into the 15-minute overtime URI looked as if they had the win as a slow shot rolled toward an open cage, but Buza made a sliding stick stop to pick up the defensive save. Saving the Bears from defeat was not Buza's final play of the game. With 2:19 left senior Meaghan Harwood (Hoosick Falls, NY) crossed the ball to the right side of the cage--Buza sprinted then dove for the ball tipping it into the goal.
Brown out-shot URI 22-8 while on the opposite side of the field junior Katie Noe (Simsbury CT) had four saves. (Simsbury, CT). The Bears continue action on Saturday, September 20, when they hosts Vermont at 12:00 noon on Warner Roof.
