Brown Field Hockey Set For 2001 Season After Opening Scrimmage
Sept. 2, 2001
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team defeated The University of Waterloo by a score of 2-0 on Sunday, September 2, in a scrimmage on Warner Roof.
The Bears finished off their pre-season with a competitive scrimmage against the Canadian University as they prepare for a season opening contest against Hofstra next Saturday. After nearly 35 minutes of dominantly midfield play, the Bears broke the scoreless tie when junior Cory Pelletier (Walpole, MA) took a pass from senior tri-captain Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) on a penalty corner and found the back of the net with 1:45 remaining in the first half.
With a 1-0 lead heading into the second half, the Bears increased their lead just 12 minutes into the half. On another penalty corner, Patterson found sophomore Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX), who fired the ball into the back of the net, giving Brown a two goal cushion with 23:03 remaining in the game.
Brown's defense would not let up the rest of the half, as senior goalie Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) recorded three stops for Brown in the second half and classmate Sasha Freidman (Silver Spring, MD) made two saves in the final 5:34 to complete the shutout.
The Brown field hockey team opens the 2001 season when it hosts Hofstra in a non-league contest on September 8 at 12:00 noon.
