Field Hockey Clipped at Providence, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by Providence, 3-2, at Lennon Family Field on Saturday afternoon. Penalty corners were crucial in the contest, with four of the game's five goals scored on a corner. Senior Kelly Conway (Oakhurst, N.J.) and freshman Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored for the Bears.

After a back-and-forth start for both teams, the first action of the game came at 19:10 when PC (2-1) gained the contest's first penalty corner. Megan Hamilton scored by deflecting Manon Van Weezel pass in to claim a 1-0 lead.

The Friars notched their second corner at 27:51 and again converted with another tip in, with Hamilton scoring her second in a row and Corinne Kenney tallying the assist at 28:02 for a 2-0 advantage, a score they would take into the break.

Providence led the half in shots, 5-2, and corners, 3-0. Junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made one save in the opening period for the Bears.

The Friars opened the second with another corner at 38:02, with Hammaker coming up with a key save.

Providence next took a 3-0 lead at 43:30 when Natalie Mitchell netted a score with the helper going to Olivia Ward.

Brown (0-2) was awarded its first penalty corner at 45:08 and converted. Sophomore Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) took the corner while sophomore Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) set up Conway for the score (45:24) to bring the game to 3-1.

The Bears had another corner at 51:52 but Condie's shot in front was saved by PC goalie Megan Guilbert.

Brown had multiple chances in the closing two minutes, which included two corners in the final 15 seconds. The Bears closed the contest with a corner in the 70th minute where Anagha Nayak eventually put in a rebound following Condie's shot for her second goal of the season.

Hammaker was solid in net for the second half, turning away three shots while Gilbert made two saves for PC. The Bears' offense picked up in the frame, edging the Friars in shots, 5-4. Brown also led in corners for the period, 4-2.

Brown will next play two road contests at Drexel on Friday, Sept. 8 (7:00 p.m.) and at Monmouth on Sunday, Sept. 10 (12:00 p.m.).
