PROVIDENCE, RI – Sophomore Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, MA) scored a pair of goals and classmate Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) recorded a career-high 22 saves to help Brown earn a 2-1 win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon, capping off a 2-0 weekend, at the Brown Field Hockey Field.
For the second day in a row, Brown's defense was outstanding, weathering a storm of 36 Rutgers' shots, 24 of which were on goal, as the Bears were outshot 36-8 for the game. With Brown leading, 2-1, McSweeney and the defense were critical during the final 10 minutes, denying Rutgers on eight corners during that span.
Despite playing nearly 95 minutes of field hockey less than 24 hours earlier, the Bears came out with energy against the Scarlet Knights. However, it was Rutgers that would score the game's first goal, as Carlie Rouh gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just 5:11 into the game. The Scarlet Knights earned four corners in the first 4:57 of the game and forced McSweeney to make five saves during that span before Rouh finally broke through when she scored on a direct shot from the top of the circle.
The two teams battled back-and-forth and O'Donnell tied the game at 1-1 when she picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and pushed it past Sarah Stuby for her seventh goal of the year.
O'Donnell then scored the game-winner with 13:30 left in regulation. She collected the ball in the midfield, and chipped it ahead to herself for a one-on-one. After pulling Stuby out of the cage, O'Donnell raced behind her and walked the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
In addition to outshooting the Bears, Rutgers also earned 21 corners to Brown's four. Brown continues action on Wednesday evening, October 24th, when it travels to Worcester, MA for a 6:00 p.m. contest at Holy Cross.
