  • Brown Athletics Announces 2013 Award Winners at Fifth Annual Senior Luncheon

    The Fifth Annual Brown Athletics Senior Celebration and Awards Luncheon was held at Andrews Dining Hall on Monday, May 20, 2013. Over 275 student-athletes, coaches, staff and distinguished guests were in attendance at the banquet to celebrate another year of success in competition, in the classroom and in the community. President Christina Paxson and Director of Athletics Jack Hayes each took the opportunity to address the room and acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of the class of 2013.
  • Field Hockey Announces 2012 Team Award Recipients

    The Brown field hockey team held its annual season-ending banquet on Saturday, April 13th at the Faculty Club on the Brown campus. Six different individuals were honored with team awards, while members of both the Class of 2013 and 2016 received their letter sweaters. Senior Kelley Harrison (Houston, TX) was also recognized for her four years of dedication to the field hockey program.
  • Green Earns NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction Honors

    Sophomore Liza Green (Providence, RI) earned NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction honors for her excellent work in the classroom. The outstanding student-athletes recognized as Scholars of Distinction have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year. Earlier in the week, Green was one of 12 Brown field hockey players to earn NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors.
  • 12 Bears Named to 2012 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad; Bears Also Earn NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award

    Twelve members of the field hockey team were named to the 2012 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year. In addition, Brown was one of 68 Division I teams to earn the 2012 NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. This award recognizes those institutions that achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
  • Four Bears Earn All-Ivy Field Hockey Honors

    Sophomores Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ), Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) and Meghan O’Donnell (Winchester, MA), and freshman Alexis Miller (Caldwell, NJ) have earned 2012 All-Ivy honors in a vote by the League’s eight head coaches. Christus and McSweeney headline the quartet, earning Second Team All-Ivy, while O’Donnell and Miller were named Honorable Mention All-Ivy. It marks the first All-Ivy selection for Christus, O’Donnell and Miller, while McSweeney earned the distinction for the second year in a row after receiving Honorable Mention All-Ivy in 2011.

As a freshman at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, Shannon McSweeney did not hesitate in choosing a position when she tried out for the junior varsity field hockey team. "I had been a softball catcher and I figured if I could keep a ball from hitting the backstop, I’d have a good chance of keeping one out of the goal,” recalled McSweeney, who as a sophomore at Brown University this fall has emerged as one of the nation’s elite goalies in Division 1

    Trailing, 1-0, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Yale (6-11, 3-4) responded from a timeout with two goals in a span of 6:47 to come back and earn a 2-1 win over the Brown field hockey team (6-11, 1-6) on Saturday afternoon in the season finale for both squads at the Goldberger Family Field.
  • Miller Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week

    Brown field hockey freshman Alexis Miller (Caldwell, NJ) has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 28th. Miller helped the Bears go 1-1 on the week with a 4-0 shutout at Holy Cross, their third straight win, and a 2-1 overtime loss at Penn.

    Sophomore Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) recorded six saves en route to her first career shutout, while sophomore Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) posted four points to help lead the Brown field hockey team (6-9) to a 4-0 win over Holy Cross (2-13) on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Bears stretched their winning streak to three games, heading into the final two contests of the 2012 season.

    Brown sophomore field hockey goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) has been named Ivy League Player of the Week. McSweeney helped to lead Brown to a 2-1 week, stopping 46 shots in three games, including a career-high 22 in the Bears’ 2-1 win over Rutgers.

    The Brown field hockey team (3-9) will conclude a busy week of competition with two games at home this weekend, resuming Ivy League play against Cornell (7-6) on Saturday at 12:00pm and then taking on non-conference foe Rutgers (8-7) at the same time on Sunday. The Bears enter the weekend after a 4-1 loss to the Providence College Friars on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Alexis Miller (Caldwell, NJ) scored for the third time this season on a feed from junior Kelsey Grossman (Shavertown, PA), and sophomore Shannon McSweeney made 10 saves in goal.

    Sophomore Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, NJ) lifted the rebound of a shot by freshman Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) over Cornell goalie Carolyn Horner with 6:27 left in the second overtime to help the Brown field hockey team (4-9, 1-3) to a 4-3 win over Cornell (7-7, 3-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Field Hockey Field.

    The visiting Providence College Friars (8-6) scored just 1:13 into the game and went on to earn a 4-1 victory over the Brown field hockey team (3-9) on Tuesday afternoon at the Bears’ field hockey field.
  • Field Hockey Hosts Providence Tuesday Afternoon

    The Brown field hockey team (3-8) returns home this afternoon for a cross-town match-up against the Providence College Friars (7-6) at 4:00pm. The Bears enter the non-conference contest looking to break a two-game losing streak, as they were defeated by Maine and, most recently, #3 Princeton. On Saturday, the Tigers played dominantly from start to finish despite impressive play from the Bears, scoring the game-winning goal six minutes into play. Sophomore Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) recorded 15 saves on the afternoon.

    In their second road contest of the week, the Brown field hockey team (3-7) returns to Ivy League play as it travels to New Jersey to take on the third-ranked Princeton Tigers (10-1). After a thrilling win against Fairfield on September 30th, Brown was defeated by Maine during the final minute of play in this past Monday’s match-up. Sophomore Meghan O’Donnell (Winchester, MA) and freshman Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, CA) each scored an unassisted goal against the Black Bears, and Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) was impressive in net, making seven saves over the course of the afternoon.

    After two straight games on the road, the Brown field hockey team (2-5) returns home to host Harvard and Fairfield in a weekend double-header. The Bears enter Saturday’s Ivy contest against the Crimson following a 3-2 loss at Quinnipiac on Wednesday, their second consecutive 3-2 loss. Freshman Alexis Miller (North Caldwell, NJ) and junior Charlotte Small (Summit, NJ) each scored against the Bulldogs, while sophomore Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) earned a pair of assists. Sophomore Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) recorded three saves.

    The Brown field hockey team (2-4) looks to get back on track with a mid-week game at Quinnipiac on Wednesday afternoon. The contest is a one-game break from League action, as the Bears resume Ivy competition this Saturday at home against Harvard. The Bears are coming off Saturday’s loss to Dartmouth, as the Big Green twice came back from a one-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over Brown. Freshman Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, CA) led the Bears with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) also scored as both Rogers and Christus notched their third goals of the year.

    The Dartmouth field hockey team (3-4, 1-1) battled back from two separate one-goal deficits to come away with a 3-2 win over the Brown field hockey team (2-4, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon at Chase Field. It marks the second consecutive year that Dartmouth has come from behind to beat the Bears by a goal after last season’s 4-3 overtime decision in Providence.

    The Brown field hockey team (2-3, 0-1) will open a two-game road stretch when it travels to Hanover, NH to face Dartmouth in a 12:00 noon Ivy contest on Saturday, September 22nd. The Bears enter the game following last Sunday’s loss to Columbia in their Ivy opener and will look to snap a two-game skid against the Big Green. For the fourth year in a row, the Brown-Dartmouth game will feature a pair of Masini sisters going head-to-head. Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) is a freshman at Brown, while her older sister, Lisa, is a senior at Dartmouth. For the past three years, the game saw Lisa go up against older sister, Kit, a 2012 Brown graduate.

    The Columbia field hockey team (4-2, 1-0) erased a 1-0 deficit with a four-goal second half to earn a 4-1 victory over Brown (2-3, 0-1) on Sunday afternoon in the Ivy opener for both squads.

    The Brown field hockey team (2-2) looks to rebound from Friday night’s loss to cross-state rival Bryant when it opens Ivy League play on Sunday against Columbia (3-2). The loss to Bryant snapped a two-game winning streak for the Bears, who had posted victories over Vermont and Colgate entering the contest against the Bulldogs.
