Six Different Bears Score in 7-1 Win over Holy Cross
PROVIDENCE, RI – Freshman Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, MA) led six different goal scorers with a pair of goals and an assist, while 11 different players tallied at least one point as the Brown field hockey team (4-11) earned a 7-1 win over Holy Cross (1-15) on Tuesday afternoon at Warner Roof.
Brown wasted little time in getting started, as sophomore Avery Burns (Millersville, MD) scored just 5:31 into the game. Stationed on the right side of the circle, senior Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA) passed up to Burns at the top right. Burns one-timed the ball to the left corner for her second goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.
The Bears extended their lead to 2-0 less than 10 minutes later, as junior Kelley Harrison (Houston, TX) found O'Donnell in the center of the circle with a pass from the left side. O'Donnell pulled around the charging goalie and scored her first of the afternoon on a reverse to the right corner at 14:31.
Brown, which outshot Holy Cross, 17-1, in the opening frame, built a 4-0 lead by the break with two more goals in a span of less than two minutes. Senior Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH) tipped a long pass from Harrison at 25:04 before senior Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD) scored on a Bears' penalty corner with assists going to Iacovetti and freshman Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, NJ) at 26:52.
The Bears opened the second half in a similar fashion, scoring twice in a span of two minutes about 10 minutes after the break. O'Donnell found sophomore Torie Stearns (Rye, NY) in the middle and Stearns was able to shoot around the goalie to the left side for her fourth of the year at 44:45. Then at the 46:47 mark, freshman Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) passed to O'Donnell on her left and O'Donnell lifted a shot over the goalie to the upper right corner for her team-leading seventh of the season.
Despite only taking four shots in the second half, Brown increased its lead to 7-0 at 66:17. Freshman Emily Longman (Shaker Heights, OH) carried the ball up the right side and sent a beautiful cross to senior Kit Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) in the center of the circle. Masini had a one-on-one with goalie Kat Matchett and lifted the ball up and over Matchett for her third goal of the year and second in as many games. For Longman, it was the first point of her career.
Holy Cross earned its only corner of the game with just 15 seconds left to play and got on the board with no time left on the clock as Jamie Caniglia played the ball up the left side to Megan Bourne, who beat freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) to the near post.
Overall, Brown outshot Holy Cross, 21-4 and had a 4-1 advantage in corners. Matchett finished with nine saves, while McSweeney made two for the Bears. Brown continues action on Saturday, October 29, when it hosts Penn in a 12:00 noon contest.
