PROVIDENCE, RI – Seniors Kit Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) and Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH) both scored for Brown, but it wasn't enough as Cornell (7-7, 1-4) claimed a 4-2 win over the Bears (3-11, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca.
The Big Red got on the board early, as Brittany Thompson, who had 12 of Cornell's 18 shots, received the ball inside the 25 yard line and drove through the Bears' defense before pulling freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) out of the cage. With McSweeney coming off her line to try and steal the ball away, Thompson made a move around her and scored into the empty net just 6:03 in.
However, Masini responded for the Bears with another great individual effort to tie the game at 1-1 just 3:42 later. A deep pass found Masini, whose initial touch popped the ball up and over her left shoulder, away from the Cornell defender that was playing her. It gave her a one-on-one opportunity against Alex Botte and she pulled around the Cornell goalie for the equalizer and her second of the year.
The tie was short-lived, however, as another Cornell goal put the hosts up, 2-1, at the 11:13 mark. The Big Red would score one more time before the end of the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.
Brown closed the gap to 3-2 at 47:06, when Taft converted the Bears' lone penalty corner of the second half. Freshman Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, NJ) inserted the ball up to junior Kelley Harrison (Houston, TX) on the left side. Harrison fired a hard shot to the far corner and Taft was there for the deflection and her third of the season.
That was as close as the Bears would come, as Cornell scored with just under 10 minutes remaining to account for the 4-2 final.
In all, Cornell held an 18-10 advantage in shots, while Botte made six saves and McSweeney recorded five. Senior Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD) also had a defensive save for the Bears.
Brown continues action on Tuesday, October 25, when it hosts Holy Cross in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
