Bears Fall to Harvard, 4-0

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Harvard field hockey team (5-3, 2-1) scored three second-half goals to open up a 1-0 lead and hand the Bears (1-8, 0-3) a 4-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field.

The Bears dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Crimson, 10-5, and earning four corners compared to one for Harvard. However, it would be the hosts that would score the game's first goal, as Katelin Wahl backhanded a shot across the goalmouth that found its way through a crowd and past freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) just 15:20 into the contest.

Brown nearly broke through with the tying score at the 33:56 mark but Cynthia Tassopoulos stopped a penalty stroke attempt by freshman Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, NJ), as the Bears headed into the second half trailing by a goal.

Harvard doubled its lead just 18 seconds into the second half when Catriona McDonald slid a pass through the crease and Noel Painter was there to one-time the ball past McSweeney.

McSweeney then kept the Bears within striking distance, saving a penalty stroke attempt by Carly Dickson in the 43rd minute of play. However, the Crimson would eventually score their third goal about 10 minutes later when Kyleigh Keating put away a rebound from close range. Emma Keller closed the scoring when she fired a shot from the right side of the net that ricocheted off McSweeney and into the cage with 4:43 left to play.

McSweeney made nine saves in net, eight of which came in the second half, while Tassopoulos stopped 12 shots, as all 12 of Brown's shots were on cage. Freshman Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) led the Bears with four shots, while senior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) added two.

The Bears continue action on Tuesday, October 4, when they welcome Quinnipiac to Warner Roof for a 4:00 p.m. non-league contest.
