PROVIDENCE, RI – Iowa's Kim Scraper, who entered the game with eight goals on the season through five contests, scored her first of four goals just 9:05 in and the 15th-ranked Hawkeyes (5-1) never looked back en route to a 7-0 victory over the Brown field hockey team (1-3), Saturday afternoon at Providence College's Lennon Field. Brown freshman goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) posted a new career-high 18 saves on the afternoon, passing her previous high of 11 by seven.
Scraper scored the first two goals of the game and then Niki Schultheis added a third for the Hawkeyes at 19:10, which is how the score would remain through the end of the first half, thanks to 12 saves by McSweeney.
Throughout the game, the Bears were doing an excellent job of moving the ball up the field, only to be stopped by the stingy Iowa defense upon entering the circle, as Brown was held to just two shots and one corner for the game.
Senior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) had the best chance for Brown with 3:57 left before halftime when she attempted a reverse shot from the left side that Kathleen McGraw was able to stop with her feet.
Iowa opened the second half with a pair of goals less than 10 minutes in, as Sarah Drake increased the lead to 4-0 at 41:18 and Scraper scored her third of the afternoon just 1:02 later for a 5-0 Hawkeye lead.
The final two goals were scored just 3:14 apart with Scraper scoring her fourth of the day and 12th of the young season at 56:41 and Becca Spengler connecting for her second of the year on a deflection off a shot by Marike Stribos at 59:55.
In addition to McSweeney's 18 saves, senior Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD) also recorded a defensive save. For the game, Iowa posted 37 shots and nine corners.
The Bears return to action next Saturday, September 17, when they travel to New York to face Columbia in their 2011 Ivy League opener. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
