PROVIDENCE, RI – Junior Kelley Harrison (Houston, TX) broke a 2-2 tie with her first goal of the season at the 64:11 mark to lift the Brown field hockey team (1-1) to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over visiting UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Warner Roof. The two teams traded goals throughout and Brown fought back from a pair of first-half one-goal deficits before Harrison's game-winner with 5:49 left to play.
The win gives first-year Bears' head coach Jill Reeve her first victory with Brown, as the Bears moved to .500 for the season.
"I thought they did a nice job today," said Reeve. "We were working on a lot of our pressing situations this past week and they really put it together today and made some positive production from their moments. I was really proud of them when I called a time out and they were able to execute a game plan. I thought Kelly Harrison with her composure over the ball to score the winning goal was really awesome."
After the Aggies grabbed a 1-0 lead just 9:50 into the game on an Amanda Marinac deflection of a Lydia Brambila shot, senior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) tied the contest with her first of the year just over 10 minutes later. Sophomore Avery Burns (Millersville, MD) started the play when she carried the ball up the right side of the field before sliding it over to Springmeyer in front. Springmeyer tapped the ball past UC Davis goalie Conley Craven to tie the score at 1-1 at 21:26.
With about nine minutes left in the half, the Bears nearly went ahead, 2-1, on a series of three consecutive shots. Craven made a nice save on an attempt by sophomore Torie Stearns (Rye, NY) from the left side. The rebound then bounced right to freshman Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, MA), who beat Craven with a hard shot that clanged off the post. O'Donnell got her own rebound, but the Aggies' defense blocked the shot, which ultimately led to a Brown corner and another Conley save.
Following the Brown series, UC Davis gained its own momentum and earned a corner of its own almost immediately. After their first attempt was blocked, Carly Schoch picked up the rebound at the left side and fired the ball to the far corner, giving the Aggies a 2-1 lead at 28:03.
However, Brown continued to attack and with just 59 seconds left in the first half, Stearns converted a beautiful through ball from Burns for her first goal of the season, tying the game at 2-2 at the break.
After a pair of Brown shots early in the second half failed to break the tie, the Aggies nearly took a 3-2 lead just seven minutes after the intermission with a three-on-one break. Rookie goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) came out of the cage and intercepted a cross right in front of the net, before getting back into position and forcing a second UC Davis shot to go wide of the net.
Both teams continued to press for the go-ahead goal, with several quality chances at both ends of the field, until Harrison's ultimate game-winner in the waning minutes.
For the game, Brown held the edge in shots, 22-18, while UC Davis earned 15 penalty corners to Brown's seven. McSweeney finished the day with five saves, while Craven made 10 for the Aggies.
Brown continues action on Friday, September 9, when it hosts Pacific in a 4:00 p.m. game. Live Stats and Live Video are available on Brownbears.com.
