Maine Hands Bears 3-1 Loss

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown field hockey team (2-9) dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Maine (9-4) on Sunday afternoon at Warner Roof. The Black Bears held a 25-5 advantage in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corners, as junior goalie Lauren Kessler (Burtonsville, MD) recorded 14 saves on the afternoon.

Maine took an early, 1-0, lead when Brittney Cummings redirected a shot by Jocelyn Mitchell past Kessler just 6:06 into the contest. From the left side of the field, Mitchell sent a long shot towards the far corner. The ball found the stick of Cummings on the right side, who deflected the ball back to the left corner of the goal for the lead.

Cummings was at it again just 20 minutes later, scoring a goal almost identical to her first one, this time from the other side of the field. Mallory Anderson sent a long shot in from the right side that was headed for the left post. Cummings was stationed near the left post and redirected the ball back to the right corner, giving Maine a 2-0 lead at 27:07.

The Bears' defense was solid in the second half and cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 58th minute on a goal by junior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ). After a shot by Maine's Alexa Binnendijk was blocked by the Brown defense, the Bears countered with freshman Kelsey Grossman (Shavertown, PA) making a nice play to set up the Springmeyer goal.

On the left side of the field, Grossman hit Springmeyer with a long pass up the sideline. Springmeyer dribbled in towards the center of the field, cutting across the circle from left to right, before firing a shot to the opposite corner for her seventh goal of the year.

Maine immediately called a timeout and outshot Brown, 8-0, during the game's final 12:34. The Black Bears had a three-minute span of sustained pressure on the Bears' defense late in the game and broke through for their third goal with just 2:39 left to play for the 3-1 final.

Brown returns to action next Saturday, October 16, when it travels to Princeton to face the Tigers in a 12:00 noon Ivy contest.
