The Brown women's rowing squad and the freshmen men excelled in the Head Of The Connecticut Regatta at Middletown,Ct.
The Brown women's open eight was timed at 18:07 over the three-mile Connecticut River course,11seconds ahead of Dartmouth and 15 seconds ahead of Northeastern ,with the Brown B boat and the Riverside Boat Club finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
The Brown first novice eight won the women's intermediate eights ewvent in 18:28,13 ahead of the Dartmouth second varsity and18 seconds ahead of Northeastern. Another Brown novice eight,a made up of all walk ons, finished third in the youth eight event.
Coach Matt Carlson's Brown freshmen men were swamped by the wash from a passing fishing boat six minutes into their race and spent 20 minutes in the water, clinging to the gunwales of their shell before being picked up. All the equipment was saved Regrouping, the Brown frosh easily placed first and second in men's youth fours and took third place in men's championship eights.
The Brown men's varsity crew, which had won the Head Of The Ohio at Pittsburgh last Sunday, finished second to Harvard in two events at the Stonehurst Regatta in Rochester, N.Y.
Exact times were not available but Brown coach Paul Cooke said his crew had finished approximately10 seconds behind Harvard in tthree-mile morning raceand three seconds behind the Crimson in the 1,500-meter afternoon dash.
Cooke was encouraged by his crew's showing. "After last season we had a number of steps to make up and we've begun to take them,'' he said.
Brown will enter crews in men's and women's championship eights, two crews in men's championship fours, one crew in women's championship fours and one crew each in men's and women's youth eights at the Head Of The Charles Regatta this Sunday in Cambridge, Ma.
