Henley Royal Regatta
July 8, 2007
Henley-on-Thames, England -
Dear Parents and Friend's of Brown Women's Crew,
Sun finally shines on the semi-final day of the Henley Royal Regatta and it did much to help fortify our crew as we sent them off to race the German National Team. Leading up to this race we faced Thames Rowing Club that is one of the most accomplished clubs in the UK. That race was yesterday morning and we beat Thames RC by a good two lengths. The conditions yesterday called upon the coxing expertise of Sarah and also challenged the rowers and they all handled the conditions with great skill and tenacity.
In the semis today we raced Dortmund and they proved to be a formidable crew. Off the start we were able to hang with them for a few 100 meters and our boat certainly matched them in intensity and in desire, but, unfortunately we were over powered. By the last few hundred meters of the race Dortmund was leading by open water however they were still striking at a rate above 30 to keep their distance on us and it was clear to us watching from the shore that Dortmund knew that we were not going to go down easily. The consensus of the girls on the dock after the race was that they had done their best to represent collegiate rowing against what very possibly could be the fastest women's crew in the world.
Thus we end our Spring racing season which spanned many, many months -- beginning on a great note on Lake Carnegie on Sat. March 24th and ending on a great note on the River Thames on Sat. July 7th!! As we write this note we trust that the team is out and about-- strolling the river banks , showing off their regal blazers, and finally getting a chance to celebrate a fantastic season. We have to say that this 2006/2007 squads' performance, attitude, and conduct has been exemplary all year and they are a real tribute to Brown.
In closing we want to thank all of you once again for making this trip possible. The opportunity to compete at the Henley Women's Regatta and the Henley Royal Regatta has been greatly appreciated and the experience will provide memories that last a lifetime.
John and Phoebe
