Providence, R.I. - The Brown women's crew will look to defend its NCAA title after being selected to compete at the 2009 Division I Women's Rowing Championships, May 29-31 in Camden, New Jersey. The Bears, winners of six national titles, including the last two, will join 15 other teams at the NCAA Championship, hosted by Villanova. The Bears are one of just four teams to compete in every NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997. Brown has also placed in the top three at every NCAA Championship.
The Bears are coming off a strong performance at the EAWRC Sprints last weekend, also held in Camden, at which they finished second in the team standings to Yale. Racing was highlighted an impressive five-second win in the second varsity eight, in which Bruno used a mid-race surge to pull away from the field and win by a decisive margin.
In 2008, Brown earned its second consecutive and sixth overall NCAA Championship at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California. The team championship is comprised of 16 teams, with each squad fielding a first and second varsity eight and a varsity four.
Also competing will be California, Clemson, Dartmouth, Harvard, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon State, Princeton, USC, Stanford, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Yale.
