Boston, MA - The Brown women's crew raced to an impressive seventh place finish in the Championship Eight at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta over the weekend, finishing with a time of 16:43, and narrowly edging Princeton by less than half a second. The crews that beat the Bears included boats composed of national team members from Canada, the Netherlands, US Rowing, and England. Bruno finished only 13 seconds behind the US Rowing squad, illustrating the tremendous potential of the 2008-09 team, which is coming off a national championship season.
The Bears had several other notable showings in the Champ Eight, as the Brown alumni boat crossed the line 17th overall, and Brown's "B" boat came in 23rd, beating the "A" boats of a number of other schools. The solid performance by the second eight shows that the depth that is a staple of Brown rowing will continue this season, as only 42 seconds separated the two boats over the course of 5000 meters.
In the Champ Four race, the women also performed well, crossing the line in eighth despite once again facing elite level competition. Only three crews that finished ahead of the Bears were collegiate teams, with the remainder composed of club and national rowers.
The Bears will be in action again on Sunday, October 26, when they travel to New Jersey for the Princeton Chase.
