Women's Crew Finishes Perfect Regular Season
May 4, 2002
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's varsity crew, top ranked in the east and second ranked nationally , finished its home season Saturday with an impressive victory over the east's third-ranked crew, Yale, on the Seekonk River running its record to 8-0.
Hoping to rattle Brown, the Yale varsity women came off the starting line at 44 strokes a minute and quickly took a three-seat lead. But soon after they settled, Brown started moving back. With 500 meters gone, Brown led by three seats. With 750 meters gone, Brown led by seven seats and in the third 500 the Bears more than doubled their lead, rowing at a comfortable 33 1/2 strokes a minute to Yale's 36.
John Murphy's varsity has beaten every opponent by open water this season and is sure to be seeded No.1 for the women's eastern sprints next Sunday on the Cooper River reservoir in Camden, N.J.
"We know Yale has a strong program and they've had a great season,'' Murphy said. "We were fully prepared for a tough race and I think we got it. I was very pleased, " he said.
The Yale second varsity also jumped to an early lead, but again the Brown crew rowed through the Elis and had open water with 500 meters to go.
Novice coach Phoebe Murphy was happy with the performance of her first novice eight, which has five walk-ons rowing. Up against the Yale first novices, who were top ranked in the east, the Brown crew fell almost a length behind in the third quarter of the race, but put on a strong rally in the final 400 meters and closed to within a deck length at the finish, losing by .72 seconds.
Weather conditions were near perfect, with only a light quartering tail wind, which had a negligible effect on the races.
