The Brown women's varsity crew head coach John Murphy expected a tough race from Yale Saturday, May 3rd on the Elis' home course on the Housatonic River at Derby,Ct. and he got it.
The Bears, who are currently ranked at the top in the East after their victory over Radcliffe last Sunday, had to work hard to beat Yale by 5.2 seconds in fast conditions.
Brown faced even tougher competition from Yale in the second-varsity race, winning by two thirds of a length. The Bears completed a sweep by winning both the varsity fours and first-novice eight races.
John Murphy and his assistant, Phoebe Murphy, will have two weeks to prepare their crews for the women's Eastern Championships, Sunday, May 18 on the Cooper River Reservoir at Cherry Hill,N.J. The Brown varsity oarswomen are five-time defending champions at the eastern championship in their event.
