Princeton, NJ - Despite choppy waters and a headwind, the sixth ranked Brown women's crew opened up its 2006 spring season with wins in the second varsity eight and second novice four races on Saturday against Princeton and Michigan. The top-ranked Tigers won the varsity eight race in convincing fashion while the Bears built up a sizable lead over the seventh ranked Wolverines for second place. Brown finished in the middle of the pack in the novice eight race as well while two of Princeton's boats earned the top spots in the varsity four race.
Princeton's varsity eight had a winning time of 7:00.9 while Brown finished with a time of 7:10.2, 11 second in front of third place Michigan. The Bears posted a winning time of 7:25.1 in the second varsity eight race as Princeton couldn't catch up, crossing the finish line in 7:27.5.
The Tigers showed their depth with wins of over ten seconds in both the varsity four and second novice eight races but Brown also established its depth with two of its boats easily defeating Princeton in the second novice four race. Brown's top boat posted a time of 8:27.3, over 30 seconds in front of Princeton.
Brown will race Radcliffe on the Seekonk River in Providence next Saturday in its home opener.
