No. 8 Women's Crew Tallies 16-8 Record on Day One at Lake Natoma Invite

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – No. 8 Brown University women's crew compiled a 16-8 overall record, including a 13-5 mark in the NCAA events, in its first day of racing at the 2018 Lake Natoma Invitational on Saturday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

Racing against No. 7 Stanford, Alabama, and San Diego in the NCAA events in the morning session, the Bears won the A varsity four, while placing second in the first varsity eight and second varsity eight, trailing only the Cardinal.

Facing No. 2 California, Gonzaga, and San Diego in the NCAA races in the afternoon session, Brown came in second in all three events, falling only to the Golden Bears.

In the B varsity four, Brown came in second place in its heat, trailing only Cal, and finished third in the grand final, falling only to Cal and Stanford. The boat picked up wins over Gonzaga, Sacramento State, and Notre Dame.

Next, Brown concludes racing at the Lake Natoma Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 15, against California, Stanford, and Notre Dame with competition for Brown beginning at 11:20 a.m. ET (8:20 a.m. PT).

No. 8 Brown won the A varsity four race and finished second in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and B varsity four in its first session of racing at the Lake Natoma Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Bears faced No. 7 Stanford, Alabama, and San Diego in the NCAA events while competing against No. 2 California, Gonzaga, and Sacramento State in the BV4. Brown trailed only the Cardinal in the 1V8 and 2V8 and fell only to the Golden Bears in its BV4 heat.

Opening the day with the A varsity four, Brown won its race in a time of 7:10.5 defeating Stanford (7:18.5) by 8.0 seconds and also topping Alabama (7:26.6) and San Diego (8:15.7).

In the first varsity eight, the Bears came in second with a time of 6:30.3, trailing the Cardinal (6:22.6) by 7.7 seconds, while defeating the Crimson Tide (6:50.3) by 20 seconds and the Toreros (6:54.5).

In the second varsity eight, Brown placed second with a 6:38.3, falling to Stanford (6:30.5) by 7.8 seconds and beating Alabama (6:54.3) by 16 seconds and San Diego (7:00.7).

Closing the morning with a B varsity four heat, Brown finished second behind a time of 7:27.6, trailing California (7:15.2) by 12.4 seconds while besting Gonzaga (7:49.4) by 21.8 seconds and Sacramento State (8:10.5).

Overall, Brown posted a 9-3 record in its opening session.

No. 8 Brown came in second place in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and A varsity four, while finishing third in the grand final for the B varsity four in its afternoon session on Saturday afternoon.

Completing their first day of racing at the Lake Natoma Invitational, the Bears trailed No. 2 California in the three NCAA events but topped Gonzaga and San Diego in all three races. In the BV4 grand final Brown fell to Cal and Stanford, while beating Notre Dame.

In the first varsity eight, Brown came in with a time of 6:31.1 falling to the Golden Bears (6:19.5) by 11.6 seconds, while besting Gonzaga (6:41.4) by 10.3 seconds and San Diego (7:00.3).

The Bears clocked in at 6:37.8 in the second varsity eight, trailing Cal (6:29.5) by 8.3 seconds but defeating the Bulldogs (6:55.8) by 18 seconds and the Toreros (6:58.3).

Rounding out the NCAA events, Brown's A varsity four finished in 7:18.7, falling to Cal (7:08.9) by 9.8 seconds, while outpacing Gonzaga (7:38.8) by 20.1 seconds as well as San Diego (8:30.0).

Closing the day with the B varsity four grand final the Bears placed third with a time of 7:18.7, falling to Cal (7:09.0) by 9.7 seconds and Stanford (7:17.2) by 1.5 seconds. The Bears topped Notre Dame (7:20.4) by 1.7 seconds.

As a team, the Bears compiled a 7-5 overall record in the afternoon session.
