CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS – The 12th-ranked Brown women's crew team battled through difficult conditions to defeat the 11th-ranked Radcliffe squad in three of the four races that were contested in Saturday's regatta on the Charles River. Both teams were put at a disadvantage by the weather, but the low temperatures and cross headwind made the Bears win even more impressive.
"The conditions were challenging with a big gusting head wind and choppy water," said associate head coach Phoebe Murphy. "Both teams raced really well in all the events, and the races were close and hard fought all the way down the course."
The regatta began with the varsity four event, and Brown's best crew crossed the line at 7:52.1 to earn a commanding victory. Radcliffe's 'A' boat finished seven seconds later with a time of 7:59.1, well ahead of the team's second four. Brown's 'B' boat rounded out the field, clocking in at 8:53.1.
Radcliffe earned its only win of the day in the next race, the second varsity eight, narrowly defeating Brown's boat. The Crimson crossed in 7:27.7, while the Bears finished in 7:31.1.
The varsity eight also proved to be a close race, with less than two seconds separating the crews, but Brown earned the victory over Radcliffe, as the Bears posted a time of 7:22.6 to the Crimson's 7:24.5.
The morning concluded with the third varsity eight race and another Brown win, as the third boating cruised to a time of 7:51.0, over seven seconds ahead of Radcliffe.
The Bears will return to action next weekend, welcoming the URI Rams to the Seekonk River on Saturday, April 13th for their first home regatta of the season.
