Brown Women’s Crew Selected to NCAA Rowing Championship; Bears Look to Defend Their National Title
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The defending national champs will have a chance to defend its title as the NCAA announced on Tuesday evening that the Brown women's crew has been selected to compete at the 2012 Division I Rowing Championship on May 25-27, on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. Head coach John Murphy has led the Bears to an appearance in every NCAA tournament since its inception, 16 years ago.
Senior captains Allison Courtin (Buffalo, N.Y.), Elizabeth Hutsell (Arlington, Va.) and Katherine Rand (Barrington, R.I.) look to lead Brown to continuing its excellence at the annual tournament of the country's best.
Last season, both Brown and Stanford finished with 85 team points at the National Championship, but the Bears performance in the varsity eight race trumped the Cardinal's and propelled Bruno to its seventh title in 15 years, their first since 2008.
The Bears have placed in the top-five at all 15 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships and finished in the top two 10 times. Bruno boasts four more titles than any other program.
Brown is one of only two Ivy League schools to win a National Championship, and the only program to win more than one. Harvard was victorious in 2003 in Indianapolis, Ind.
