PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Fifth-ranked Brown edged No. 20 Radcliffe by 2.6 seconds in the Varsity 8 race, one of four events between the Ivy League rivals Saturday morning on the Seekonk River. The Bears were victorious in all four races.
"The Varsity 8 was a really hard fought battle," said assistant coach Phoebe Murphy. "Both crews were right on each other the whole way down the course."
The varsity race was the first of the day, and the competition was hotly contested the entire way. The Bears pulled out to a half-length lead at 750 meters into the race. Brown reached the line in 6:27.30, topping Radcliffe's time of 6:29.73.
The Bears also won the final three races of the morning in a regatta that was relocated to Providence due to a poor racing weather forecast on the Charles River.
The Bears' second varsity finished in 6:31.93, topping Radcliffe by 12.45 seconds. Brown had the two top-finishing boats in the varsity four as the A finished in 7:31.92 and the B came in at 7:35.01.
Brown made it a clean sweep with a win in the third Varsity 8, finishing in 6:55.73, more than 16 seconds ahead of Radcliffe.
