Bears Continue Strong Performance At NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship

Gold River, California –The Brown women's crew advanced its second varsity and varsity fours into the grand finals, and its varsity eight into the petite finals, at the NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championship, held on Lake Natoma, located outside of Sacramento, California.


Virginia and Cal each advanced all three boats into Sunday's grand finals, while Brown, Stanford, Southern Cal and Princeton have advanced two boats.  The Bears have won six previous NCAA Rowing titles, the last at Lake Natoma in 2008,  and placed in the top five at every NCAA Rowing Championship.


The dominating performance of the morning was turned in by Brown's second varsity eight, who captured its semifinal by nearly five seconds. In the open water victory, Brown rowed in 6:27.67, outdistancing Virginia, who rowed in 6:32.50, while Cal, who placed third in 6:32.73.


Joining the Bears' second varsity in Sunday's grand finals are Virginia, Cal, Stanford, Princeton and Michigan.


Brown took care of business in the varsity fours and advanced to Sunday's grand final by placing third in its semifinal, rowing in 7:17.73.  Cal had the top semifinal score with 7:13.22, while Washington placed second in 7:14.41.  In addition to Brown, the grand finalists are Virginia, Southern Cal, Wisconsin, Cal and Washington.


Brown's varsity eight placed fifth in its semifinal heat and advanced to Sunday's petite final along with Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA, Washington and Wisconsin.  The Bears rowed in 6:30.80, but fell behind the torrid pace set by Princeton, who rowed in 6:18.76.


The NCAA Division I Rowing Champion will be crowned on Sunday.  The Division I Fours grand final will start at 10:15 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 11:00 am and the varsity eight petite finals at 11:30 am.
