Brown Women Pull Away for 52-47 Win Over Alcorn State
COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The Brown women's basketball team used 10 second half points from freshman Nyema Mitchell to pull away from the Alcorn State Lady Braves and take a 52-47 win in the first round of the Texas A&M Verizon Holiday Tournament.
Guards Rada Pavichevich and Barbara Maloni each buried a three-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the first half, giving Brown a 22-18 lead heading into the break. In the second half, the Lady Braves came out strong, taking a five point lead before the Bears started a critical rally.
The Bears tough defense kept the Lady Braves off guard, holding Alcorn State to 33.3% shooting from the field.
Brown used their size advantage inside to push themselves past the Lady Braves. In addition to Mitchell's game-high 14 points, junior center Rachael MacDonald picked up 11 points and 11 boards for her first double-double of the season. Barbara Maloni also added 14 for the Bears, who improved to 4-5 on the season with their second consecutive victory.
The Bears will face the host Aggies on December 30 in the championship game of the Holiday Tournament, as Texas A&M ladies defeated Centenary 94-49 in the first game of the tournament.
