PROVIDENCE, RI -- The Brown women's basketball team was unable to shake off some early shooting troubles, and fell to the Manhattan Lady Jaspers 83-80 in its home opener on Wednesday night.
Manhattan opened up a 36-31 halftime lead after leading by as much as eleven in the first half. The Bears shot only 29.3% in the first half, but rallied to tie the game at 39 and take their only of the game three minutes into the second half.
However, Manhattan was able to use some strong low-post play to take a 12-point lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game as the Lady Jaspers controlled the offensive boards, scoring several second chance baskets to push the lead up to as many as 13 points with ten minutes to go in the game.
Brown came back, though, using a dominating press that forced a total of 32 Manhattan turnovers. Sophomore Barbara Maloni led the way for the Bears, as she scored a game-high (and season-high) 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Rada Pavichevich added 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Brown is back in action this weekend, hosting the BankRI/Brown Classic. The Bears face Canisius on Saturday at 1:00 in the first game of the tournament, with Butler facing Davidson at 3:00. The championship game will be played on Sunday at 3:00, the consolation game at 1:00.
