Hurricanes Breeze by Bears, 81-41, at UM Holiday Tournament

Coral Gables, FL - Junior guard Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) netted a team-high 10 points as the University of Miami Hurricanes (9-3) earned an 81-41 victory over the Brown women's basketball team (1-9) at the Bank United Center during the Miami Holiday Tournament this evening. Leading Miami was senior forward LaToya Cunningham with 14 points, followed by Riquana Williams and Shenise Johnson with 13 points a piece.

Although the Bears found themselves down 17-2 seven minutes into the game, both Johnson and sophomore guard Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) picked up steals and went the length of the court to help the Bears to a 12-9 run to bring the score 26-15 at the 8:28 mark. But the hot shooting Hurricanes picked up its offensive intensity and quickly gained a 40-18 lead heading into halftime.

Riquana Williams led the Hurricanes with nine points, as Shenise Johnson threw in eight as the team shot 37 percent from the field and scored 28 points off Brown's 18 turnovers that half. Junior forward Natalie Bonds (Taveres, FL) went into halftime with seven rebounds, as Williams led Bruno in scoring with seven points. The Hurricanes shot 37 percent from the field, as the Bears shot just 28 percent.

Miami continued its run, outscoring Brown 11-5 in the first 3:44 minutes of play in the second half to extend its lead to 51-23. Bonds continued her aggressive play down on the block, scoring five of Brown's 11 points with 12:50 remaining in the game. The Bears' shooting didn't improve in the second half, as the team shot just 26 percent (15-57) from the field. Miami, shooting 45 percent from the field in the second stanza, continued to pick apart Brown's offense, extending its lead to 81-41 to end the game.

Also chipping in for the Bears was Williams with nine points, followed by junior guard Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) with eight.

The Bears will play Duquesne University (9-4) in the consolation game starting at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. The Dukes dropped an 87-67 decision to No. 9 ranked Auburn (13-0) in the first game of the UM Holiday Tournament.
