Providence, RI - In the final game of the 17th annual Brown BEAR Basketball Classic, the Brown women's basketball team (1-8) fell, 64-41, to the University of Massachusetts (5-4) at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) and freshman Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) were both named to the Brown Classic's All-Tournament team for their solid performances over the weekend.
Despite Brown shooting just 23 percent from the field, the Bears played a competitive first half against the Minutewomen and headed into the locker room down by four, 23-19, at the half. Leading Brown's offense was sophomore guard Karly Grace (Camp Hill, PA) with six points, followed by sophomore guard Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) who threw in five.
Stefanie Gerardot led the UMass attack, going three-for-seven from beyond the arc for nine points. Gerardot continued to lead her team, scoring eight of the squad's 12 points in the first five minutes of the second half to give UMass a 10-point lead.
A Grace three-pointer cut Brown's deficit to seven, but UMass answered right back with a three. The Minutewomen continued to build their lead, extending the score to 43-31 with 11 minutes left on the clock. Gerardot drained another three to put the Minutewomen ahead 51-33 with 8:24 remaining in the game. Gerardot, a Brown Classic All-Tournament team selection, drained 22 points for the game and went seven-for-11 from the field, including six-for-10 from the three.
The Bears couldn't seem to get in their groove, shooting just 20 percent in the second half and combined for 23 percent for the game (12-55). Leading the scoring was Grace with 11 points, followed by Johnson with seven and Williams with six. Also scoring in double-digits for UMass was Cerie Mosgrove with 12 points, and leading the squad in rebounds was Kristine Danella with 11.
The Bears do not play again until Dec. 29-30 when it travels to Miami, FL, for the Miami Holiday Tournament. The Bears will take on the University of Miami at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, and then take on Auburn or Duquesne the following on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
