The Brown University Women's Basketball Team dropped a 69-62 decision to the University of Rhode Island in overtime. The Bears took an early lead in the game, but lost that lead half way through the first period and never regained it. With three seconds left on the clock in regulation sophomore Holly Robertson (Cochrane, Alberta) laid the ball in to tie the game at 57.
Turnovers killed Brown in overtime, as the team committed nine in the five minute period. Rhode Island took a quick lead in the overtime period and the Bears did not catch up.
The Bears were led once again by junior Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) who netted 16 points and pulled down nine boards. Mitchell was perfect from the foul line, where she earned six of her 16 points. Robertson added 12 points as freshman Jackie Vocell (Atkinson, NH) contributed ten.
Junior Tanara Golston (Skokie, IL) recorded six points, six boards, three assists, and two steals as freshman Sarah Hayes (Beaufort, SC) grabbed seven rebounds and added five points. Freshmen Ashley Van Kurin (Yorba Linda, CA) netted eight points and grabbed two steals as Colleen Kelly (Rochester, NY) led the team in steals with four.
The Bears continue action this weekend as the host the Bank of Rhode Island Brown Classic. Brown will face Lafayette at 1:00 p.m. Saturday December 7, 2002 and then go on to play either Drexel or Vermont on Sunday December 8, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.
