Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Rhode Island, 64-59

Providence, RI - The Brown women's basketball team fell to state rival Rhode Island Tuesday night, 64-59, at the Pizzitola Center. Brown held a one point lead at the half but 16 turnovers led to 20 points for the Rams in the second half as Rhode Island maintained the lead through the final 18 minutes of play.

The Bears, now 1-4 on the season, were led by senior Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) with 13 points and seven rebounds and junior Holly Robertson (Cochrane, Alberta) with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Robertson added three blocks while Mitchell tallied two along with two steals on the defensive end. Also scoring in double figures for Brown was sophomore Sarah Hayes (Beaufort, SC) with ten. The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year had six boards and three steals as well.

Senior Tanara Golston (Evanston, IL) dished out a season-high eight assists in the defeat along with eight points. In 20 minutes of action, freshman Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton, CA) contributed five points, six rebounds, two steals and a block.

Overall, the Bears out-rebounded the Rams 39-31 and out-shot them 47 percent to 38 percent. The loss was Brown's third loss by five points or less this season. Brown will host its annual Classic this weekend and will face New Hampshire in the opening round on Saturday at 1 p.m. Boston College and Liberty will tip-off at 3 p.m. in the second game of the Tournament.
