Bridgeport, CT - The Brown women's basketball team dropped a 55-52 decision to UMass in the consolation game of the Coca Cola Classic hosted by Fairfield on Sunday, Nov. 30. Senior Nyema Mitchell led the Bears, who are now 1-3 on the season, with 16 points and 11 rebounds, including 6 offensive, in her first double-double of the season. She was named to the All-Tournament Team as Brown finished fourth at the Classic.
The Bears were up by as many as 11 in the first half but UMass grabbed a 34-31 lead by the end of the half, going on an 18-4 run. The second half saw seven lead changes with Brown taking a 41-40 lead at the 12:58 mark after a three pointer by sophomore Jackie Vocell and two straight buckets by Mitchell.
The Minutewomen regained the lead but Brown stuck close and tied the game with 5:54 left to go when freshman Kathleen Barr netted her first career field goal. UMass responded by scoring six unanswered points as Brown went cold, going 1-5 down the stretch. The Bears had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds after two missed free throws by the Minutewomen but Mitchell's three-point attempt as the buzzer sound came up short.
Vocell added nine points on three treys for Brown and sophomore Sarah Hayes chipped in with six points and five boards. Junior Holly Robertson contributed six points off the bench and senior Tanara Golston dished out a game-high six assists.
The Bears return home on Tuesday, Dec. 2 to take on state rival Rhode Island at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Center.
