Bears Fall in Championship Game, 66-49, to West Virginia

Orono, ME - In the championship game of the Dead River Company Classic, the Brown women's basketball team (1-5) dropped a 66-49 decision to the West Virginia Mountaineers (5-1) on Saturday afternoon. Both sophomore Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) and sophomore Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) earned a spot on the Dead River Company Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Bears played solid on both ends of the court and kept the Mountaineers on their toes. Lee tallied eight points while junior forward Natalie Bonds (Tavares, FL) and Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) added six to keep the Bears within striking distance of West Virginia as Bruno headed into the locker room at halftime down 27-23.
While West Virginia gained a lead early on, a lay-up by Johnson tied the game 15-15 with 5:55 left in the first half. Forward Liz Rapella and center Natalie Burton both added a few jumpers to enable the Mountaineers to take the lead again, but six consecutive points, including two free throws, by bonds tied it up 21-21 with 2:59 remaining.
With a 27-23 edge, West Virginia went on an 8-0 run to start the second half with the help of the All-Tournament Team's Most Outstanding Player, Takisha Granberry, and Burton. The Mountaineers continued to build its lead, but Brown's Passafuime kept the squad in the game with 15 second-half points.
Passafuime finished the game with 16 points, while Bonds totaled 10 points and six rebounds. Lee finished strong for Bruno, as she tallied eight points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Leading the Mountainners was Repalla with 15 points and seven boards, followed by Burton with 13 points and Granberry tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when the squad travels to Boston to take on the BU Terriers at 7:00 p.m.
