Vestal, NY - The Brown women's basketball team captured the 2004 Binghamton Time Warner Classic Championship on Sunday with a 68-50 win over host Binghamton. Senior Holly Robertson was named the Tournament MVP as she led the Bears with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Junior Jackie Vocell added 16 points in the win. Junior Colleen Kelly was selected to the All-Tournament Team after leading Brown to its 66-56 win over Robert Morris in the first round of the tournament with 18 points, eight rebounds and six rebounds.
Brown shot the lights out in the first half with Vocell pouring in all 16 of her points on 6-7 shooting, including 4-4 from downtown. The Bears held Binghamton to just three field goals in the half. The Bearcats got their final field goal of the half at the 8:41 mark.
Vocell's second three of the half capped off a 12-0 Brown run, spanning 4:03 with 9:53 left to play. Vocell dumped in five more points with another three and a nice pump fake in the lane to give the Bears a 27-11 lead with 7:17 left to play. Brown took a 20 point lead, 35-15, with just under four minutes left on Vocell's fourth three of the game.
The Bearcats scored 12 of their 20 first half points on free throws, led by junior Jen Haubrich 7-8 performance at the line. Senior Holly Robertson added six points in the half for the Bears.
Brown built up a 24-point advantage in the second half as Binghamton got no closer than 16. Robertson led the charge with 11 points in the half.
The Bears ruled the boards, out-rebounding the Bearcats 45-29. Brown defense also held Binghamton to just 27% shooting. This year marked the first time in four years the Bearcats did not win its own tournament.
Brown will return home to face in-state rival Rhode Island on Wednesday night at the Pizzitola Center, beginning at 7 p.m.
