Orono, ME - The Brown women's basketball team dug a hole in which they couldn't recover, as they lost 73-49 in the second game against St. John's during the Dead River Company Classic at the University of Maine this weekend.
Led by freshman Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) who netted 12 points and pulled down four rebounds as well as sophomore Catherine Schaper (Houston, TX) who added 11 points, the Bears could not get out of the hole they dug against the Red Storm.
Down 37-20 heading into the locker room at half-time, Lee was leading Brown as she went 4-5 from the field, scoring 10 of the team's 20 points. Brown, who has been dominating the boards the last few games, was out-rebounded 53-34 and shot 29 percent from the field for the game.
Schaper scored the Bears' first two points after half-time, as Brown then went three minutes without scoring. St. John's took advantage and went up 46-24 just four minutes into the game.
The Bears fell to one of its biggest deficits with 8:37 remaining in the second half, 61-38, and Brown could not recover. With just 3:50 left in the game, the Bears were down 65-43. Despite the efforts of Schaper, who added 11 points for the half, as well as freshman Shae Fitzpatrick's (Lynnfield, MA) eight points, the team could not dig themselves out of the hole.
Lee led the team with 12 points, followed by Schaper's 11 and Fitzpatrick's 10 points for the night. Senior Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton, CA) pulled down a team-high six rebounds as freshman Natalie Bonds (Taveres, FL) grabbed five.
Leading the scoring for St. John's was Angel Tate with 17 points and 12 rebounds as Joy McCorvey netted 13 with seven boards.
The Bears will host Marist on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Center
