Bethlehem, PA - Poor first half shooting plagued the Brown women's basketball team (1-1) as it fell to Lehigh (1-1) by a score of 77-69, on Sunday afternoon at the Mountain Hawks' Stabler Arena. Despite over-powering Lehigh in several categories, Brown's 28 percent shooting in the first half, coupled with a 9-19 free throw margin, proved to be the difference. Senior captain Sarah Hayes led the Bears with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in the loss.
Lehigh grabbed a 33-27 lead at the half as it shot 46 percent from the field to the Bears 28. Brown improved its accuracy in the second half but the Mountain Hawks only got better, knocking down 48 percent of their attempts.
Lehigh increased its advantage to 16 points at 58-42 with 10:40 remaining with a pair of Claire Sullivan free throws. The Bears began to chip away at the Lehigh lead, and Brown drew to within three at 70-67 with 1:05 remaining. The Mountain Hawks used timely free throw shooting down the stretch to balloon the lead back to a comfortable margin in the game's final moments.
Brown committed just seven turnovers in the match while forcing 16. The team also out-rebounded the Mountain Hawks 43-40. Senior Colleen Kelly chipped in with 15 points while junior Ashley King-Bischof added 12 points.
Several members of Brown's freshman class saw quality time in today's game. Catherine Schaper led the Bears' frosh with six points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of play. Megan McCahill, Jaclyn Goldbarg and Alex Katich netted field goals as well.
The Bears will take part in the University of Rhode Island Thanksgiving Tournament beginning on Friday. Brown will be taking on the Rams in the first round of action with a tip-off time of 12 noon. Last season, the Bears defeated Rhode Island with two seconds left off a Lena McAfee lay-up. Brown will play either Villinova or Mississippi on Saturday.
