In a well-balanced scoring attack, senior captain Sarah Hayes led Brown with 17 points and seven rebounds while junior Ashley King-Bischof netted 16 points and pulled down nine boards. Senior Jaclyn Vocell and Colleen Kelly added 15 and 13 points respectively.
Brown knocked down nine three's in tonight's win on the strength of Vocell's four treys. King-Bischof and Kelly added two each as well. Kelly snagged seven steals, which ties her career-high. Free throw's proved to be a huge factor as the Bears out-shot the Stags by a 19-5 margin.
The Bears quickly took a 16-point lead by the 9:03 mark in the first half, eventually expanding it to 18 heading into the locker room. Hayes notched 13 of her 17 points in the opening half off 3-4 shooting and 6-6 from the line.
A three by Kelly with 16:28 left to play in the second half gave Brown its biggest lead of the night, 47-27. Fairfield steadily tightened the margin as a lay-up by Baendu Lowenthal made it a 65-62 contest with 3:06 left. Brown's veteran leadership showed through in the waning minutes however, helping keep the Stags off the board the rest of the way.
The team will travel down to Lehigh on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tip-off with the Mountain Hawks. The Bears took a 69-61 win over Lehigh last season in the championship game of the Brown Classic. The Mountain Hawks fell to the Penn Quakers 76-73 tonight in overtime.
