Feb. 27, 2009
Providence, RI - The Brown women's basketball team (2-22, 1-10 Ivy) fell 61-38 to Princeton University (10-14, 5-5 Ivy) on Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Tigers were led by Addie Micir's 13 points, as sophomore Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) led Brown in scoring with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Princeton Tigers came out hot in the first 20 minutes, shooting 55 percent from the field to take a 29-19 lead heading into halftime. The Bears jumped out to an early lead to start the game, but Princeton came right back after a three by Addie Micir and a lay-up by Edwards to gain the lead and hold onto it for the rest of the half.
A lay-up by sophomore Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) with 4:54 left in the first brought the Bears within four of the Tigers, but a three point basket by Princeton's Edwards pushed its lead back up to seven. The Tigers extended it to 11 points with 1:02 left after a jump shot by Shelbie Pool, but Karly Grace (Camp Hill, PA) decreased her team's deficit to 10 with a free throw with 47 seconds left, as the Tigers went into the locker room at half with a 29-19 lead.
A few turnovers and five scoreless minutes to begin the second half, allowed the Tigers to build a 41-19 lead at the 14:50 mark. A free throw by Johnson broke the silence, and Williams followed it up with a jumper and then a trey to put the score at 43-25 with 11:05 left in the game. Grace drained back-to-back three pointers to come within 11 of the feisty Tigers with just 3:22 remaining on the clock, but Princeton pushed it back up to 15 and continued to build on its lead to finish the game 61-38.
Brown gave a solid effort on the glass, out-rebounding the tall Tiger team 35-32. Leading the effort was senior captain Amy Ehrhart (Golden, CO) with a game-high eight boards, followed by Williams with seven and sophomore Sarah Delk (Atlanta, GA) with six. Grace added nine points tonight, as Ehrhart chipped in with six. Behind Micir's 13 points was both Lauren Ewdwards and Whitney Downs with 10 apiece, and Julie Berger led the team in rebounds with six. Brown's Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) also gave a solid effort, as she finished the night with four assists, three steals and two points.
The Bears will challenge the University of Pennsylvania (6-18, 3-7 Ivy) in their final home game of the 2008-09 season. The Quakers fell 61-51 to Yale tonight at the John J. Lee Amphitheatre. Brown will honor its two seniors, Amy Ehrhart and Jaclyn Goldbarg after the game against the Quakers.
