Ithaca, NY - Although the Bears led the game the entire first-half, the Brown women's basketball team (5-21, 3-9 Ivy) was defeated by Cornell(12-13, 8-4 Ivy), 41-36, on Saturday night at Newman Arena.
As both teams got off to a slow start with the score at just 6-5 in Brown's favor after the first eight minutes of play, the Bears quickly picked up the place and had a lead throughout the entire half.
Senior Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) hit a trey to put the Bears ahead, 17-14, and sophomore Catherine Schaper (Houston, TX) followed with a baseline jumper to give the Bears its biggest lead of the half, 19-14 with 5:14 left. Both teams battled back and forth, but Brown headed into half-time on top, 25-22.
Cornell was able to cut its deficit, and jump ahead of Brown, 33-31, with 9:33 remaining in the game. Scoring for the Bears was freshman Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) with a lay-up, freshman Shae Fitzpatrick with a jumper, and McAfee with a jumper.
But the Big Red held Brown scoreless, and took a 36-31 lead with 7:29 on the clock. Cornell's Moina Snyder got fouled on a lay-up and converted the free-throw, and Shanna Scarselletta put in five consecutive points.
Junior point-guard Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) who picked up her fourth foul early in the first half, fouled out with 4:38 remaining, with Brown down 38-33. A foul shot by freshman Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) cut Brown's deficit to four points, but the Big Red put it back up to six points after a basket by Megan Hughes.
Senior Ashley King-Bischof snuck in a lay-up on the left side, but Cornell answered right back with a jumper by Snyder, which eventually ended the game, 41-36.
Leading the Bears was Johnson with 10 points and five rebounds and King-Bischof with six points and eight rebounds.
