Providence, RI - Meagan Cowher's game-high 24 points led the Princeton Tigers (5-18, 2-5 Ivy) to a 70-56 victory over the Brown women's basketball team (2-20, 1-7 Ivy) at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday night. Brown sophomore Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) led Brown in scoring with 11 points and three rebounds.
In the first seven minutes of play, Princeton jumped out to 24-11 lead with the help of Meagan Cowher's nine points. The Tigers continued their hot shooting, but six consecutive points scored by Johnson cut the Bears' deficit to 35-19 with 2:00 remaining in the half. Betsy Jacobson (Rochester, NY) then hit back-to-back buckets, putting the score at 37-23 heading into the locker room at the half.
After the half, Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) hit two jumpers to cut Bruno's deficit to just 10 points, but Princeton's Whitney Downs and Cowher combined for 10 points to put the score at 47-31 with 15:15 left in the game.
A trey by senior Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) and a jumper by Johson brought the Bears within 11, and then a bucket by sophomore Natalie Bonds (Tavares, FL) cut it to 49-40 at the 10-minute mark. Freshman Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) brought the Bears as close as they would come, but Princeton kept attacking Brown's defense to defeat the Bears, 70-56.
Following Cowher's 24 points and nine rebounds was Whitney Downs with 19 and Caitlin O'Neill with 10 points and seven boards. Brown's Johnson netted 11 pints and handed out two assists, while Williams chipped in with 10 points and a team-high five rebounds. Both O'Neal and sophomore Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) dished out three assists.
