Princeton, NJ - The Brown women's basketball team (3-17, 1-5 Ivy) was defeated, 69-51, by Princeton (10-9, 4-1 Ivy) on Saturday night at Jadwin Gym. Leading the Bears offense was junior Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) with 13 points and six rebounds and senior Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Bears were down 18-4 after the first 10 minutes of play, but two quick baskets by McAfee and a steal and lay-up by O'Neal, cut Brown's deficit to 18-10. Although the team was shooting just 23 percent in the first half, they kept the score close, 27-17 heading into halftime.
Princeton's Meagan Cowher, the Tigers leading scorer, netted 10 points in the first half, while scoring her 1,000th career point. O'Neal and McAfee both scored four points at the half, while Schaper pulled down six rebounds.
McAfee started the Bears offense in the second half, as she put in a lay-up and converted a free-throw after being fouled, but Princeton's Cowher went off for 13 more, ending the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Brown fell as much as 21 points behind, but was able to cut the deficit to 14, with 3:23 remaining in the game, but eventually lost, 69-41. Freshman Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) netted 10 points and grabbed four rebounds and sophomore Catherine Schaper (Houston, TX) had nine points and seven rebounds.
The Bears will host Cornell on Friday, Feb. 9 and Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 10, for 7:00 p.m. games.
