Ithaca, NY - The Brown women's basketball team (1-16, 0-3 Ivy) dropped a 70-37 decision to Cornell (10-6, 2-1) on Friday evening at Newman Arena. Leading Brown was Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) with 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds, followed by freshman Betsy Jacobson (Rochester, NY) with eight.
Sophomore Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) and Williams led the Bears' offense in the first half, netting 14 of the team's 16 total points. Williams went four-for-nine from the field for eight points, as Alexander was three-for-seven with six points. But the Cornell Big Red shot 57 percent from the field (16 for 28), and also 56 percent from the three (5-9) and took a 24-12 lead after the first 12 minutes. Cornell forced Brown into 11 first-half turnovers, and silenced the Bears for nearly nine minutes to increase its lead to 39-16 heading into halftime.
Brown's Jacobson and sophomore Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) came out hot in the second stanza scoring Brown's first 12 points in eight minutes. In that time, Cornell built a 25-point lead as Shannon Scarselletta, Jeomi Maduka, and Moina Snyder all added to The Big Red's run.
Maduka led Cornell in scoring with 15 points and seven rebounds, as Scarselletta and Gretchen Gregg chipped in with 10. Cornell out-rebounded Brown 37-33, and also went 11-15 from the free-throw line. The Bears shot 34 percent from the field for the game, and went just three-for-eight from the charity stripe. Senior Annesley O'Neal grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists, and Alexander finished with six points and four rebounds.
The Bears travel to New York City to take on Columbia tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
