New Haven, CT - - In its first Ivy League game of the season, the Brown women's basketball team (2-13, 0-1) was defeated, 69-49, by the Yale Bulldogs (7-7, 1-0) at the John J. Lee Amphitheater on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) led the Bears in scoring with 12, and freshman Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) added nine.
The Bears came out strong, as the team began the game with a great amount of energy and a full-court press that forced Yale into 13 turnovers. Brown jumped out to a 4-0 lead, after a lay-up by senior Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton., CA) and two free-throws by freshman Lindsay Walls (Santa Cruz, CA). Although the lead changed hands five times, the Bears were still ahead by one with 10 minutes left in the half.
But Yale took control of the lead for good after they forced Brown into 20 turnovers that half, and also silenced the Bears on the offensive end for seven minutes, which gave Yale a 31-18 lead heading into the locker room at the half.
Walls, King-Bischof and Lee each netted four points for the half, as senior Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) grabbed seven rebounds.
But a 13-point deficit is as close as the Bears would come, as the Bulldogs held onto a 20-point lead throughout the remainder of the game. Yale's Erica Davis, who scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, also grabbed 11 rebounds and Chinenye Okafor scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Fitzpatrick, who went scoreless in the first-half, put up 12 points in the second. She was Brown's leading scorer, who also had added two steals and three rebounds. Lee added nine points and four steals, while King-Bischof had seven points and seven rebounds.
The Bears will be back in action on Jan. 20, when they host Yale at 4 p.m. at the Pizzitola Center.
